If your cash is stuck with your customer, here’s a new way out.
You delivered the goods and raised a ₹50 lakh invoice, but your customer will pay after 45 days. Meanwhile, salaries, GST payments and other expenses still have to be paid.
For MSMEs selling to another Micro or Small Enterprise, getting an invoice financed has not always been easy. From 22 September 2026, a government guarantee adds support to TReDS invoice financing, giving eligible transactions another way to access funds before the customer’s payment comes in.
What is TReDS?
TReDS is an RBI-regulated online marketplace for MSME invoices that has been operating since 2017. Once a buyer accepts an invoice, the MSME can upload it on the platform, where banks and NBFCs bid to finance it. The seller can then choose from the available bids based on the applicable terms and charges.
TReDS financing is collateral-free and without recourse to the MSME seller. If the buyer later defaults, the financier follows up with the buyer rather than recovering the amount from the seller.
The platform has also seen a sharp rise in invoice discounting, from ₹40,000 crore in FY22 to ₹3.47 lakh crore in FY26, according to the Ministry of MSME.
What is CGTMSE cover on TReDS?
Since 22 September 2026, CGTMSE guarantees 75% of the amount in default on eligible TReDS invoices, following the Union Budget 2026–27 announcement.

Myth buster: The 75% cover does not mean you receive 75% of your invoice. It protects the financier, not the MSME seller.
Why Small-Buyer Invoices Get More Support
Financiers have traditionally preferred invoices from large corporates and PSUs. The new guarantee gives invoices from Micro and Small Enterprise buyers additional support on TReDS.

If your buyer is a large company or PSU, the guarantee does not apply, but you can still use TReDS for invoice financing.
How a CGTMSE-Backed TReDS Transaction Works

Once you reach Step 4 and accept the financier’s bid, the financing is complete from your side. The guarantee covers the financier through CGTMSE and comes into play only if the buyer fails to pay.
What does it really cost?
The total cost includes the discount, guarantee fee if passed on, platform charges and applicable taxes. Since financiers bid for each invoice, there is no fixed rate.

5 questions before you accept a bid
The rate is only one part of the cost. Before choosing a bid, check the charges involved and the amount that will actually reach your bank account. These five questions can help you compare the offers:
- What is the total discount on the invoice?
- Is there a guarantee fee, and who pays it?
- What platform charges will apply?
- What taxes will be added?
- How much will I receive in my bank account, and when?
How to get started
If you want to use TReDS for invoice financing under the CGTMSE cover, the process starts with checking both your business and the buyer’s eligibility:
- Check your Udyam registration: Confirm that your business is classified as Micro or Small.
- Check your buyer: Confirm that the buyer is registered on TReDS and is also classified as Micro or Small.
- Register on a TReDS platform: You can register on M1xchange, RXIL or DTX (KredX).
- Upload accepted invoices: Upload invoices that have been accepted by the buyer and compare the net bids available before choosing one.
FAQs
Can Medium Enterprises get CGTMSE cover on TReDS?
No. The CGTMSE cover is available only when both the buyer and seller are classified as Micro or Small Enterprises.
Is TReDS financing with recourse to the MSME seller?
No. TReDS invoice financing is without recourse to the MSME seller, so the financing does not become the seller’s liability if the buyer fails to pay.
Who pays the guarantee fee?
The applicable guarantee fee can vary by transaction. Check with the TReDS platform before accepting a bid to understand whether a fee applies and who will bear it.
The takeaway
TReDS has already given MSMEs a way to turn accepted invoices into earlier access to funds. The CGTMSE guarantee adds another layer to this system when the transaction meets the Micro and Small Enterprise conditions.
For an MSME, the key is to look at the complete cost of each bid and the amount that finally reaches the bank account. That gives you a practical basis for choosing how to finance an invoice, rather than looking at one rate in isolation.
