TAN Registration

Required if your business deducts tax (TDS) on salaries or payments.

What is TAN Registration?

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department of India.
It is mandatory for all businesses that are required to:

  • Deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source)
  • Collect TCS (Tax Collected at Source)

TAN enables businesses to:

  • Deposit TDS/TCS with the government
  • File quarterly TDS/TCS returns
  • Issue TDS certificates (Form 16A, 16, 27D)
  • Comply with Income Tax rules on payments to employees, vendors, and contractors

Without TAN, a business cannot legally deduct or deposit TDS/TCS.

Why is it Needed?

TAN is required because:

  • Any business that makes payments subject to TDS must have TAN
  • Banks do not accept TDS deposits without TAN
  • TDS returns cannot be filed without TAN
  • Mandatory for issuing TDS certificates to employees/vendors
  • Required for salary processing, contractor payments, rent, professional fees, interest payments, etc.

TAN ensures the business meets all TDS/TCS compliance obligations.

Who Should Apply?

TAN is required for individuals, businesses, and entities that deduct or collect TDS/TCS.

Applicability Triggers (When TAN Becomes Mandatory)

A business must apply for TAN when:

  • It hires employees (salary TDS)
  • It pays contractors/vendors regularly
  • Office premises are taken on rent (rent TDS)
  • It pays professionals (CA, lawyer, consultant fees)
  • It pays interest other than bank interest
  • It is liable for TCS (scrap sales, tendu leaves, timber, etc.)
  • Turnover crosses ₹10 crore, triggering Section 194Q (purchase TDS)
  • It needs to file quarterly TDS returns

If any payment is subject to TDS/TCS → TAN is mandatory.
