The Government of India has launched the third round of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel – PLI 1.2. This initiative under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan aims to position India as a global hub for high‑grade steel manufacturing.
Focus Areas:
The scheme targets 22 advanced steel categories such as super-alloys, stainless steel, CRGO steel, and titanium alloys, focusing on defense, aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.
MSME Opportunities:
- Access to new manufacturing and supply-chain opportunities.
- Incentives for domestic manufacturing upgrades
- Reduced import dependence → more OEM demand locally
- Opens doors for SMEs in automotive, EV, and defense components
- Incentives for upgrading facilities and technology.
- Increased domestic demand through import substitution, opening doors for ancillary MSMEs.
How to Prepare:
- Assess product portfolio for alignment with any of the 22 steel sub-categories.
- Evaluate investment or upgrade needs in technology and production capacity.
- Keep track of eligibility criteria and application windows to access incentives.
