The Government of India has launched the third round of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel – PLI 1.2. This initiative under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan aims to position India as a global hub for high‑grade steel manufacturing.

Focus Areas:

The scheme targets 22 advanced steel categories such as super-alloys, stainless steel, CRGO steel, and titanium alloys, focusing on defense, aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.


MSME Opportunities:

  • Access to new manufacturing and supply-chain opportunities.
  • Incentives for domestic manufacturing upgrades
  • Reduced import dependence → more OEM demand locally
  • Opens doors for SMEs in automotive, EV, and defense components
  • Incentives for upgrading facilities and technology.
  • Increased domestic demand through import substitution, opening doors for ancillary MSMEs.

How to Prepare:

  1. Assess product portfolio for alignment with any of the 22 steel sub-categories. 
  2. Evaluate investment or upgrade needs in technology and production capacity. 
  3. Keep track of eligibility criteria and application windows to access incentives.
